Stop Counting Screen Time. Start Measuring Thinking.
Is all screen time created equal? Why educators need to change the conversation about technology.

Every few months another headline appears.
“Schools need less screen time.”
“Kids are spending too much time on devices.”
“Technology is destroying attention spans.”
These are headlines I hear on a regular basis, and while they certainly grab attention, they rarely get at the crux of the issue. They reduce a much more complicated conversation into a single measurement: time. The implication is that screens are the problem. I do not think they are. I think the real issue is the kind of thinking happening on those screens.
As educators, we understand the concerns. We see students who struggle to stay focused, instinctively reach for distraction, and sometimes find it difficult to engage in sustained reading or deep thinking. Those concerns are real, but they are only one side of the story.
But we also watch students design prototypes with a 3D printer, create podcasts, produce documentaries, code robots, collaborate with classrooms across the country, and build digital portfolios that would have been unimaginable twenty years ago. We see students inspired by the capabilities of what is possible. Those experiences also happen on a screen. Yet they often get lumped into the same category as passive scrolling on social media. That distinction matters.
We Are Asking the Wrong Question
There has been a lot of talk on limiting screen time or taking it away altogether. Students can cheat with AI so we need to go back to paper. This talk concerns me as I remember what that looked like in school. I think of my own uncle who struggled to write due to lacking the finesse of fine motor skills. If only he had had the options of voice typing and computers in general it would have transformed his educational experience. I heard stories about my grandmother doing everything she could to get him the support he needed, but those supports simply were not available in school. Today, many of those same accommodations benefit everyone, not just the students they were originally designed to support.
I am reminded of the curb cut effect, the idea that innovations designed for one group often end up benefiting all of society. Voice typing, closed captions, speech-to-text, and predictive text all began as accessibility tools. Today they help countless learners. If we throw out the baby with the bath water the progress we have made becomes nil. In our rush to solve one problem, we risk throwing away decades of progress.
Somewhere along the way we’ve started treating every minute spent looking at a device as if it carries the same educational weight. I don’t think it does. In fact, I think we’re asking the wrong question. The problem is not the screen. The problem is what the screen is asking students to do.
I have started thinking about technology a little differently. The question is no longer, What is on the screen? The better question is, What is the screen asking students to do? Is it asking them to think deeply, create, revise, and solve problems? Or is it asking them to keep clicking, keep scrolling, and keep consuming? Those are very different experiences, even if they happen on the same device.
There is one more piece of this conversation that I think is worth mentioning. The concern is not always what students are doing on a screen. Sometimes it is about what the screen is replacing. If hours of passive screen use are crowding out sleep, physical activity, face-to-face conversations, reading for pleasure, or even opportunities to be bored long enough for creativity to emerge, then we should absolutely be concerned. Those experiences matter just as much as what happens on a device.
I know I am guilty of this as an adult. How many times have I picked up my phone to check one thing, only to realize twenty minutes have disappeared? Those are twenty minutes that could have been spent reading, writing, walking the dog, or talking with my family. Our students are not immune to that same pull.
As educators, we are not simply trying to reduce screen time. We are trying to help students build balanced lives where technology supports learning without replacing the very human experiences that help them grow. The goal is not to eliminate screens. It is to make sure they are enhancing learning rather than crowding out the experiences that make us healthier, more creative, and more connected.
School Librarians Have Been Preparing Students for This Moment
As librarians, we have always known that not every source deserves equal credibility. Not every book is equal. Not every website is equal. We spend our careers curating collections because we know quality matters. So why would every digital experience be equal?
For years, we have taught students to ask questions like:
Who created this?
Why was it created?
Who benefits?
Whose voices are missing?
How does the algorithm influence what I am seeing?
Those are cognitive tasks. Those are not “screen time.” Those are literacy. One reason this matters so much is that many of the digital tools our students use every day are not actually designed to help them learn. They are designed to keep them engaged. Infinite scrolling, autoplay, notifications, streaks, and endless recommendations all encourage us to stay just a little longer. The longer we stay, the harder it becomes to step away and return to the kind of sustained attention that deep reading, writing, and problem solving require. They are designed for what researchers often call “stickiness.” Their goal is not necessarily to help us learn. Their goal is to keep us engaged.
That does not mean technology is the enemy. It means we need to help students recognize the difference between technology that captures their attention and technology that develops it. A Chromebook used to create a documentary is asking something very different of a student’s brain than an app designed to keep them scrolling for another twenty minutes.
I actually think the next evolution of media literacy is helping students recognize this difference. We still want students asking whether a source is credible, but now we also need them to recognize when technology itself is trying to shape their behavior. Is this app helping me think more deeply, solve a problem, and create something meaningful, or is it simply designed to keep me engaged a little bit longer? Helping students recognize the difference between a tool that encourages deep thinking and one that simply captures attention may become one of the most important literacy skills we teach. Rethinking Technology Through AI and SAMR
Artificial intelligence has only made this conversation more important. A student using ChatGPT to generate an essay and another student using ChatGPT to challenge an argument are both using AI, but they are engaging in completely different levels of thinking. One student is outsourcing the work. The other is extending it. The tool tells us very little. Thinking tells us almost everything.
Many educators will recognize this idea from Ruben Puentedura’s SAMR model. For years, we have encouraged teachers to think beyond simply replacing paper with pixels. Technology becomes most powerful when it enables learning experiences that would otherwise be impossible. I think that same lens can help us rethink screen time. The question is not whether students are using technology. The question is whether technology is expanding opportunities for thinking, creating, collaborating, communicating, and solving authentic problems. Typing a worksheet instead of handwriting is still substitution. Producing a documentary with interviews, narration, and an authentic audience fundamentally changes learning.
When I step back and look at all of this together, I cannot help but think that school librarians have been preparing students for this moment all along. We teach students to evaluate information, recognize bias, identify misinformation, synthesize ideas, and create knowledge instead of simply consuming it. Those skills do not become less important because information arrives through a screen or because AI has entered the conversation. If anything, they have become even more essential.
Better Questions
Maybe the future of education is not reducing screen time. Maybe it is helping students recognize the difference between screens that consume their attention and screens that expand their thinking.
Instead of asking: How much screen time did students have today?
Perhaps we should ask:
Did students create something that did not exist before?
Did technology make learning possible in a way that paper could not?
Were students consuming information or constructing knowledge?
Did they collaborate?
Did they solve a meaningful problem?
Were students thinking more because of the technology or less because of it?
Those questions tell us far more than a daily screen time report ever could. Maybe that is the conversation educators need to lead. Instead of debating whether students should be on screens, we should be asking how technology can help students think more deeply, create more authentically, and engage more meaningfully with the world around them.
The Conversation Educators Need to Lead
The conversation around screen time isn’t going away. Nor should it. There are legitimate concerns about distraction, attention, algorithmic design, and the role technology plays in young people’s lives. But as educators and school librarians, we also have a responsibility to push the conversation beyond simple metrics.
We have spent decades teaching students that not every source is equally credible. Maybe it is time to acknowledge that not every screen experience is equally meaningful either.
No one walks into a library and assumes every book has the same educational value simply because it is made of paper. We curate collections because content matters.
It is time we start thinking about screens the same way.
Because in the end, the most important question is not: How long were students on a screen today?
The better question is: What kind of thinking did that screen make possible?
